Electricity in Cyprus

Electric in Cyprus is provided by The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC), who currently holds the monopoly on electricity generation in the country, although the market is open to other companies. The EAC operate 3 electricity power stations in Cyprus: Dekelia, Moni & Vasilikos, where in 2007 alone, it generated a total of 4 786,2 GW of electricity!

As a condition to Cyprus’s accession to the European Union, the local market for electricity generation has been liberalised and as such the EAC has sought to diversify into other products. Below is the link to their site for a history of the company, contact details, fault reporting, tariffs, news etc.

http://www.eac.com.cy

The EAC issue their bills on a bi-monthly basis, you have a small standing charge along with the consumption from your meter. Bills are posted to the property, or another address is Cyprus (not abroad sadly). Your electricity bill can be paid in the EAC offices, your bank or online using internet banking (avoids the long queues in their offices)!

Plugs and sockets in Cyprus?

Cyprus uses the BS1363, 3-pin, 13A, 240V, 50Hz Earthed & Fused plug - similar to those used in England. The BS1363 plug, also known as a “13 amp plug”, is a large plug with 3 rectangular prongs forming a triangle.

Electricity in Cyprus is 230 Volts, alternating at 50 cycles per second. If you travel to Cyprus with a device that does not accept 230 Volts at 50 Hertz, you will need a voltage converter.

There are three main types of voltage converter. Resistor-network converters will usually be advertised as supporting something like 50-1600 Watts. They are light-weight and support high-wattage electrical appliances like hair dryers and irons. However, they can only be used for short periods of time and are not ideal for digital devices.

Transformers will have a much lower maximum Watt rating, usually 50 or 100. Transformers can often be used continuously and provide better electricity for low wattage appliances like battery chargers, radios, laptop computers, cameras, mp3 players and camcorders. However, they are heavy because they contain large iron rods and copper wire.
